Charlie Daniels Band - Devil Went Down To Georgia
Artists > Charlie Daniels Band > Devil Went Down To Georgia

The devil went down to Georgia. He was lookin' for a soul to steal. He was in a bind 'cause he was way behind, and he was willin' to make a deal, when he came across this young man sawin' on a fiddle and playin' it hot. And the devil jumped up on a hickory stump and said, "Boy, let me tell you what. I guess you didn't know it but I'm a fiddle player, too. And if you'd care to take a dare, I'll make a bet with you. Now, you play pretty good fiddle, boy, but give the devil his due. I'll bet a fiddle of gold against your soul, 'cause I think I'm better than you." The boy said, "My name's Johnny, and it might be a sin. But I'll take your bet, you're gonna regret, 'cause I'm the best that's ever been."

Johnny, rosin up your bow and play your fiddle hard, 'cause hell's broke loose in Georgia and the devil deals the cards. And if you win you get this shiny fiddle made of gold. But if you lose, the devil gets your soul.

The devil opened up his case and he said, "I'll start this show." And fire flew from his fingertips as he rosined up his bow. And he pulled the bow across the strings and it made an evil hiss. Then a band of demons joined in and it sounded somethin' like this: When the devil finished, Johnny said, "Well, you're pretty good, old son, but sit down in that chair right there and let me show you how it's done.

Fire on the mountain. Run, boys, run. The devil's in the House of the Rising Sun. Chicken in the bread pan pickin' out dough. Granny, does your dog bite? No, child, no.

The devil bowed his head because he knew that he'd been beat. And he laid that golden fiddle on the ground at Johnny's feet. Johnny said, "Devil, just come on back if you ever want to try again. 'Cause I told you once, you son of a gun, I'm the best that's ever been."

He played, Fire on the mountain. Run, boys, run. The devil's in the House of the Rising Sun. Chicken in the bread pan pickin' out dough. Granny, does your dog bite? No, child, no.

Everyone needs to go to Charlie Daniels' website and go to his Soapbox. He's got some good things to say.

I think that the Devil went down to Georgia because Jesus died on the cross.

Er, Bert... I think the devil went down to Georgia because he heard your mom was single and living in Atlanta.

Go to flashplayer.com...there is a hilarious animation that uses this tune as the score. It tells the story of the song in furiously funny fashion. I rolled on the floor because it was so good.

this song is so good... i love it...the fiddle is an awesome instrument and this song is one of the greatest songs ever! thats all i have to say

by lacy_jones on 01-28-2005 @ 12:58:24 AM
I always thought the song had something to do with the legend of the curse of 27. You know how all the great music legends die at the age of 27 b/c back in the day some blues singer that really sucked at first sold his soul to the devil to become one of the greatest in a weeks time? In a way it makes since you win youget a fiddle made of gold (all the monely and fame) and if you lose he gets your soul. Only this time the devil lost. But hey I don't know. But I do really belive the 27 thing b/c too many legends have died at that age.

This is a really cool song. I expect Cradle of Filth will cover it at some point, lol.

lacy_jones, the guy you are refering to was Robert Johnson, who was rumoured to have sold his soul at the crossroads, in exchange for the ability to play the blues better than anyone else.

by angeleyes07 on 03-31-2005 @ 09:57:50 PM
I just love this song, and how some folks can just make a song about anything. And I love how fast it goes, with the fiddles and all.
