Countdown to Noon! ... Come celebrate the "noon" year! Don't stay up until midnight? Welcome in the New Year at Sci-Port's countdown to "noon," with hats, noisemakers and hands-on activities. When it's noon at Sci-Port it will be midnight in Thailand! In Thailand, the new year is celebrated with water, which is believed to wash away bad luck, and string tying, which represents good wishes. Songkran, is the name of the Thai traditional New Year Party.
After welcoming in the Noon Year, help us turn a tradition on its head with a balloon drop Sci-Port style. Teams will ferry robust water balloons from the second floor balcony to the lobby by dropping the balloons to waiting team members holding "trampolines." A short discussion of force and impulse will precede this friendly competition. Be prepared to have your bad luck washed away! For the hydrophobic, there will be other non-water related activities including learning how to make some simple braids of twine to give to friends to express good wishes for the New Year.
