Incompetency of the Jamaica passport office
published: Monday | May 22, 2006

THE EDITOR. Sir:

ON OR around April 2005, I submitted to the Jamaican Embassy in Washington D.C. a passport application form, my old passport, photographs, my birth certificate and fee for renewal of my passport.

I was informed around June 2005 that I needed to submit a new birth certificate as there seemed to be something amiss. I obtained and submitted my new birth certificate in September 2005.

After several months and not receiving my renewed passport, I kept calling the D.C. office and was informed that they had been in touch with the passport office in Jamaica but could not obtain any proper information as to the delay of the renewal.

LENGTHY SIGNATURES

In March 2006, I was requested by the Passport Office, via D.C. to place my signatures on a plain sheet of paper and return it to them, to which I complied.

The Passport Office then said that the signatures were too lengthy and sent a form for me to resubmit my signatures. I complied and submitted the executed form in April 2006.

I have now been informed by the Embassy that the Passport Office could not find the page of signatures that I sent in April. At this time (May 10, 2006, a month later) I am again resubmitting my signatures.

It is now a whole year and to date I have not received my renewal passport. I have a sick relative in Jamaica and am not able to travel. I am getting really fed up with the incompetency of the Jamaica passport office. Jamaica is now computerised and should do better.

I am, etc.,
