A lot of people have been having difficulty posting pictures on the CrossRoadsRV message board. The question seems to come up every few weeks and it is difficult to explain quickly so here is a detailed tutorial on including pictures in a post and attaching a picture to your signature. I'll try to improve and up date this thread from time to time so don't be surprised if you see it pop up every now and then.
Image Hosting First you need to decide on a place to host your pictures. There are several free image hosting web sites including Photobucket, Webshots, ImageShack etc. Just Google 'free image hosting' and you'll find lots.
For simplicity sake I’m going to use photobucket as an example.(only because that is the one I'm familiar with) Photo bucket can be found here: photobucket.com
To register fill in all the required fields and you will have your own account. You are now ready to upload a picture. You should have a screen that looks somewhat like this....

To upload a picture from your computer to Photobucket click on the “browse button”

This will open a window and allow you to browse your computer to find your picture file. Once you find your desired picture select the file and click “open” at the bottom of the window. This will automaticly put the pictures file path here...

You can upload more than on picture at a time by clicking on “Add more images” and repeating the process. Once you are ready to begin uploading the pictures simply click on the “upload” button.

Be patient. It can take some time. After the picture is uploaded to the site you should see the image in thumbnail form below the upload section of the photobucket page....

...if you do. Congratulations you have successfully uploaded a picture to a photo hosting website and now you are ready to use that picture. The key to the whole process is to use the pictures URL. It can be found here next to the words “URL link”...

Simply by clicking on the URL link you will copy the link. You can now paste that link into your signature and into posts on the message board. You will be tempted to use the “IMG code” Don’t. This will just confuse you later. |

Embedding a picture into a post on the messageboard
This is done very simply. In your post you simply need to paste the URL link into the proper forum code. On the reply page click the insert image button above the reply box....

This will automatically insert the proper forum code into your reply like this....

Now simply paste the URL link between the two bracketed codes. In between the ][ like this...

now post your reply (it might be a good idea to preview it first to make sure everything worked) and you should see...

If you prefer, you can type in the forum code yourself. Just remember it is case sensitive. It must be in lower case letters.....img not IMG

Posting a link to a picture
Sometimes you may not want to embed a picture into a post. You may just want to have a link to a picture. If you are posting several pictures at once it is good message board etiquette to post links to pictures rather than a mass of images. Again using the same URL link from your image host. You can simply paste the link into your reply.

this will yield this.....
http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s7/ehj70-2/NewGraphics2.jpg
....a clickable link in your response. The forum software will automatically put the needed forum code on the URL. This works alright but if you want to clean it up a bit you need to go a bit further. You can customize what the clickable area says by modifying the code slightly. Here is the Code...

Put your URL link between “” here....

and put what you would like to have appear as the link here....

and you will get....
Easy Right? Don’t panic. There is a short Cut. You can cheat by using the 'Insert Email' button on the reply page. The Button is to the left of the ‘Insert Image' button we used earlier. Here...

After you click this button a window will open up and say “Text to be shown for the link. Leave blank if you want the e-mail address shown for the link” In the box, type in the text you would like to have your link say and click OK. Another window will open and ask “URL for the link” you will see “mailto” already in the box just delete that or paste your URL link over it and click OK and the forum software will insert the necessary code into your reply box. Note: This procedure also works with other URLs to websites etc. |

Adding a Picture to your Signature
Adding a picture to your signature is as easy as adding a picture to your post. You need to add the URL link and the forum code to your signature in your profile. To get to your profile click the link in the upper right hand corner of the a forum page.

Enter your information to get to your profile page. You then simply type in the forum code and the URL in the Signature box.

Remember that the Form code is case sensitive. Be sure to use ‘img’ not ‘IMG’ |

Picture Posting Tips
Edit your Pictures. Although most image hosting websites do provide some picture editing features none are as good as what you can do using your own photo editing software. Edit your pictures before you upload them to the host. If you have no image editing software there are some free ones on the web including infranView and Photo Gadget
Size Matters. Keep your pictures as small as possible. Big enough so that all the detail can be seen but not so big that they are cumbersome to our friends with dialup connections or that people have to scroll the screen from side to side to see the whole thing. In order to make the picture smaller without losing detail crop the picture and cut out the unnecessary parts. This is especially a good idea for your picture in your signature. If you are showing a picture of your rig. Show the rig. Cut out the trees and the sky and all that other stuff leaving a nice sleek picture of what you really want people to see. Again..size your pictures using photo editing software before you upload them.
Preview before posting. Both the reply page and the signature box on your profile have a preview button. Click it and a window will open showing exactly what your post or signature will look like before you post it. You don’t have to start a test thread with 15 posts with no pictures then 10 more huge pictures until you finally get it right. If it doesn’t show up in the preview it’s not gonna show up on the messageboard. If it’s gigantic in the preview it will be gigantic on the board.
Don't break the link Once the link is created if you change anything with host the link will be compromised and the picture will no longer show up. If you delete or move the image the host will usually give a warning that the established links will be broken. If you do have to move or edit an image you will have to relink the image to the message board.
Questions Just post them here on this thread and someone will surely help you out.

Hey Eric, cool thread, very well done! Two things you could do would be great though. In your original post, after showing how to upload the pics, show a screen shot how to resize the pick in photobucket to "signature" size. I have a question, how do you get multiple pictures to look as though they are one, such as Stroker94's new pic? And can you make this a sticky on top of the general questions page. Another suggestion to others on the forum, we could use this as the "official" place to test you signature when you get done changing it. One note to users if it does get to be the offical test place, delete all the posts that are bad, but leave the final finished product. Then we could have a collection to admire after a while. Does that sound good Eric?
P.S. Eric, You need to post the picture of you unit on the boat, its a cool picture.

Nice job Eric. Should be very helpful. Maybe Crossroads would consider posting this as a sticky if possible???

Denny. I've never been successful making a picture smaller using photobucket. All my pictures I resize using Adobe Photoshop before I upload them. This is also where I put two or more pictures together. My signature was made and sized completely on Photoshop before I uploaded it. If a person has a digital camera they should have a basic photo editing program that came with it. I'm no expert by my advise is don't bother trying to do it on the host's site, edit it first and then upload it.

I think you can do that in your profile useing the "IMG=left]/IMG=left] or "center" "right" tags. I have used it with my motorcycle picture, But I need to do some croping and resizing on them so my postings are not so big.

Its easier than that. Just put both picture addresses on the same line. No spaces in between.

Both work. My old signature was done the way Pete mentioned. Just put a string of image code one after the other.
The way Doug mentioned works too. I just centered my signature.
