Flames Win 1-0 Thriller Over Cumberland posted October 31, 2003 The Lee University Flames soccer team saved the very best for last on Thursday night in a thrilling 1-0 victory over a battling Cumberland University Bulldog team. The two evenly-matched clubs would not give an inch until Lee scored with only 1:15 remaining in the contest. After keeping the pressure on the Bulldogs for the final 15 minutes, the Flames finally scored the winning goal on a header by sophomore Chris Walker. Senior Mesac Celeste made the perfect throw-in and Walker hammered the ball home. "A win is a win," said coach Henry Moyo over and over as he walked away from the huge victory. "It was an ugly victory but we will certainly take it. For some reason we came out flat in the first half. However, we certainly picked up momentum late in the contest and were able to beat a good Cumberland team." The victory assures Lee of a spot in the final four TranSouth Conference tournament, which will be played next Thursday and Friday at Berry College. The Flames will likely face Trevecca Nazarene University in the opening contest. "We will take the 10-5-4 regular-season finish and the 4-2-1 record in the conference anytime," added Moyo. "This team has overcome a lot of adversity and has found a way to win their last three regular season games. We are hoping this momentum will carry on into the tournament." As usual, the Flames out-shot their opponent 20-12. Many of the shots were off target. The final stats showed Lee getting only five shots on goal. The Bulldogs also had five shots on target. Lee's Tuda Murphy had five saves from his goalkeeping position, while Craig Young had three saves for Cumberland. The Flames will try to make it four straight wins on Saturday when they host Georgetown College in a 7:30 p.m. start. It will be senior night for co-captains Phillip Riley and John Brose. Outstanding defender Mesac Celeste, forward Landon Colofrancesco and goalkeeper Elroy Joseph will be making their final appearances. |
