Inaugural Business Incubation Forum - a step in the right direction. - 2006-10-11
A wide cross-section of the local business community, as well as representatives from the public sector turned out at the Inaugural Forum on Business Incubation staged recently by Technology Innovation Centre at the University of Technology.
Addressing the forum, Minister of State in the Ministry of Industry, Kern Spencer hailed the event as the right opportunity to engage the critical questions of how to nurture entrepreneurship, and an ideal initiative to strengthen the inextricable link between business incubators and economic development.
The Minister spoke of the developmental push that can be derived from incubators, especially at this time in the Caribbean. The Jamaican Government, he said, has already initiated two pilot projects - the Small Business Incubation Project, aimed at facilitating the creation of sustainable employment opportunities; and the Community–based Production Centres (CPCs) that will facilitate private businesses creating employment opportunities within communities.
Minister Spencer expressed confidence that capital investment into business incubation could create a major boost to the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) sector, and provide the potential for creating jobs in a number of areas. Against this background he looked forward to the alliances, partnerships and creative entrepreneurial developments that would emerge from the forum.
Co-sponsored by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the forum featured a number of international presenters – from Australia, Colombia, the United States, the United Kingdom and St. Vincent and the Grenadines - who shared their experiences of how business incubation has impacted their national economies. Presentations from local entrepreneurs inspired lively debates on the current business climate in Jamaica and how best to encourage and sustain entrepreneurship in the future.
The Technology Innovation center has the enviable record of being the first Business Incubator within the English Speaking Caribbean. The center was established on the main campus of the University of Technology, Jamaica in 2002. Since 1987, the University has been playing a pivotal role in Entrepreneurial development in Jamaica, through the formation of the Entrepreneurial Centre, from which the TIC was developed.
To date the incubation programme of the TIC has positively impacted the development of twenty- four (24) small businesses. In 2005, two incubated companies received national awards and recognition for Best Innovation, the Popularisation of Science & Technology, and Information Communication Technology at the inaugural Innovations in Science & Technology Award staged by the Ministry of Commerce, Science & Technology.
