Blackletter is the name given to the dark, angular and condensed letterforms that evolved between the 9th and 15th centuries in northern Europe. During this period books were needed in increasing numbers, and since moveable type was not developed in Europe until the middle of the 15th century, blackletter evolved as a compact, standardized and widely recognized and understood letterform. It was used by Gutenberg in his printing, but was soon supplanted in most places by the Humanist letterform. It survives today principally in pub signs, newspaper banners and heavy metal music groups’ visual communication materials.
Despite its history Blackletter is commonly used in what can be considered mainstream applications.
