[edit] broken links in MediaWiki namespace

[edit] bugzilla:1829

  • Have you tested if the "paremeters" will be preserved during navigation, if you go, edit a page and come back again?
  • Please allow:
  1. MediaWiki:Choosenamespace/de

Namensraum

  1. MediaWiki:Rcoptions/de
    1. I would say you should copy the English text. Reason after analysing the messafes at wikipedia:de:Special:Allmessages I have written bugzilla:2045. There are to many differences between en:, CVS:de: and de: .

  • What's this? A new feature for Version (1.5bnikesonf).
  • I see your Interwiki table does not include bugzilla.

	avar	gangleri: read that
	CIA-2	avar * phase3/languages/ (12 files):
	CIA-2	* (bug 2045) Updated showhideminor so that all the options that are displayed
	CIA-2	in the English version are displayed here as well.
	gangleri	One moment
	gangleri	avar: you got the point about the differences in showhideminor ;
	gangleri	avar: you can look at this from two perspectices
	gangleri	a) it aplies to the same wiki lat's say is.wp - the functionality for the contributors and visitors would be different depending on the language file which is linked to is.
	gangleri	b) another issue to think a bout are non wikimediafoundation wiki's ;
	gangleri	Mediawiki wants to have both a good share and a good reputation.
	gangleri	which options are supported in csv and which not SHOULD not depend on the language of the user interface
	gangleri	by default they should generate / allow the same functionality
	gangleri	at the moment this is not
	gangleri	In order to install a patrolled wiki you will need to make changes here and there and not as stated in
	avar	1. I agree, and I've fixed it
	avar	2. Your bug reports are near impossible to figure out
	avar	Just to give you an example, here's your bug report (http://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2045) rewritten:
	avar	The showhideminor message in many language files doesn't include the $1, $2,
	avar	$3 and $4 variables like the Language.php version does, for example german has:
	avar	* "kleine Änderungen $1"
	avar	whilst English has:
	avar	* "$1 minor edits | $2 bots | $3 logged in users | $4 patrolled edit"
	avar	This causes these options not to be displayed, please fix the affected language
	avar	files which are:
	avar	* List of language files here *
	|<--	fexx has left irc.freenode.net ("( www.nnscript.de :: NoNameScript 3.81 :: www.XLhost.de )")
	avar	That says it all, when you file something write 1. What's wrong 2. How it should be (and what needs to be done to fix it, if applicable)
	gangleri	... in http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Patrolled_edit
	|<--	RMS has left irc.freenode.net (Client Quit)
	gangleri	OK: I was not skilled to this. I have seen that many administratirs make a good job regarding the content, bringing people together but they are unavare to read the documention or to find out what should be done and how
	gangleri	One is to write it should be done another that this happens.
	gangleri	Many persons I have contacted are very cooperative and have the same gool to have a good interface and a impresiv wiki.
	gangleri	For software updates I missed at ro a checklist waht should be done and how. This is why i wa started searching ans researching. It was not my intention to blame anybody.
	gangleri	Surry for ssplling errors I use a keyboard with a differnt layoit and am very tired .
	avar	I know, in fact it's good that you report issues like these, all I'm saying is that when you do it's often very hard to read the report
	NathanJY	hm
	NathanJY	Patroled edits could be limited to people who have edited a certain number of pages
	NathanJY	instead of just all users vs. admins
	|<--	brion has left irc.freenode.net (Read error: 113 (No route to host))
	NathanJY	for marking things as patroled
	avar	of course they could;)
	gangleri	I know. Often im trying to have an idea about inpacts during writing the reports. Sometimes I thing also about alternatives: one moment
	gangleri	Instead of adding to your wiki all MediaWiki:foo/aa, ab ac, presumed language codes you should be able to add MediaWiki:foo/ALL
	NathanJY	wait
	gangleri	they are capital sensitiv
	NathanJY	bleh nevermind
	gangleri	so MediaWiki:foo/en overwrites MediaWiki:foo/En not
	gangleri	I tried this out because I made a mistake.
	gangleri	Userfi:Nickarabit has shown me his betawiki whwre he has implmented filter Recentchanges by namespace
	gangleri	I want to suggest him the following:
	gangleri	Boundle namespaces selector box
	gangleri	This means that you can filter for namespace foo OR namespace foo_talk
	gangleri	another feature request was to filter for contribuors others then yourself.
	gangleri	Many cotributors have problem to find the contributions of OTHER users
	gangleri	What do you think?
	-->|	nsh (~U-Idiot@nsh.wikipedia) has joined #mediawiki
	gangleri	Finaly I found out that you should be able to search for patterns.
	avar	There's an open bug for the namespace selector already
	gangleri	He's finishid until I got avare that he can not use the default German messages because of the difference
	gangleri	Hopefully he will forgive me http://jadesukka.homelinux.org:8180/betawiki/Toiminnot:Recentchanges

	brion	having cmd+1 do something when it's right next to cmd+q is maybe not the best idea
	brion	my conversion of imported nl wikipedia to 1.5 finished
	gangleri	regardin filtering for a pattern it would be somthing usefull to identify OVERWRITE messages filtering only for messages containing / or as you like /is
	brion	just shy of 10 hours :P
	gangleri	these three ideas are new for me; maybe others where thing about.
	gangleri	Anyway having MediaWiki:foo/ALL yould require some changes
	dammit	cmd+q rocks
	dammit	brion: 10 hours to do nl conversion?
	gangleri	Another Idea to have a better synchronisation with CSV would be to have MediaWiki:foo/LOCAL
	brion	dammit: with my slow IDE hard drives, relatively small memory, and not tuned configuaration
	gangleri	Then en.wp and de.wp can just use the messages they want without INFLUENCING CSV according to THEIR needs
	dammit	brion: which part took most time?
	brion	dammit: majority seemed to be moving cur text old(->text)
	brion	some portion later (at least 15 minutes, less than 3 hours... not sure exactly) was copying revision data from there into revision table
	gangleri	avar : do you have more questions? I will need to have some sleap ...
	avar	I had no questions to begin with...
	gangleri	Do you thing that the additions are usefull?
	dammit	I should put in some proper external store cases..
	avar	gangleri: some kind of automatic syncing with CVS ?
	gangleri	Yes. the /LOCAL Messages shoul NEV ER be oberwritten
	avar	are they currently?
	|<--	TomK32 has left irc.freenode.net (Remote closed the connection)
	gangleri	Yes. There are two users: one moment
	gangleri	http://mi.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:MediaWiki_default , http://eo.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:MediaWiki_default
	gangleri	http://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:MediaWiki_default ...
	gangleri	It is a bot.
	gangleri	I have seen messages modified by User:MediaWiki_default and REVERTED
	gangleri	THis is why /LOCAL should be preserved
	brion	MediaWiki: messages that have been edited are never automatically overwritten unless this is explicitly directed.
	===	ALL Unknown command
	brion	normally, only those last edited by MediaWiki default are overwritten by the updater.
	gangleri	You know that Clearyourcache is out of date.
	gangleri	Despite the fact that many wikis (10 - 15) have chande them in own language, this change is NOT active in another language.
	brion	what's Clearyourcache?
	gangleri	Try to see is.wp with german interface and you wiull understand
	brion	ok, used in some prefs.
	brion	if you select a non-default language, the defaults in the language files are used.
	avar	I think what he means is that when someone edits message foo on de. it doesn't show up on is: if you select german as your language there
	brion	of course it doesn't
	avar	gangleri: is that correcT?
	gangleri	Clearyourcahe: If you use a java scrip it will load properly only pressing ctrl+SHIFT+r for Mozilla; not as stated in earlier versions ctrl+r (without SHIFT) it will not

	gangleri	you need to make somthink like http://yi.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Allpages&from=Clear&namespace=8 to help visiors until the RIGHT files are updated
	avar	So, the problem is that yi.wikipedia.org doesn't have a namespace selector?

  1. Could you pease add meta: to the "interwiki table"?

    2. OK: [[meta:Main Page]] generates meta:Main Page
    3. fails: [[meta:]] "without any parameter" genereates meta:

  1. Could you please add also http://vs.aka-online.de/cgi-bin/globalwpsearch.pl?timeout=30&minor=1&search=$1 to be able to use globalwpsearch:Albert Einstein? Thanks in advance!
    1. globalwpsearch:Albert Einstein works and generates [1].
    2. It is not supposed to use [[globalwpsearch:]] "without any parameter". This would generate globalwpsearch: .

  1. Test about "known behaviour" with "bugzilla:
    1. OK: [[bugzilla:1512]] generates bugzilla:1512
    2. fails: [[bugzilla:]] "without any parameter" genereates bugzilla:

[edit] meta:Write your own MediaWiki extension

[edit] extension UNDERSCORES

  1. <UNDERSCORES></UNDERSCORES> would be something usefull and an equivalent to {{PAGENAMEE}}
meta:User:Ryant suggested the following code (I did not have an activ wiki to test it):
For your <underscores> tag idea, it should be fairly simple to implement. The ExampleExt extension has the basic synax for declaring a new tag.
The line :
$wgParser->setHook( "example", "renderExample" );
would be changed to :
$wgParser->setHook( "underscores", "renderUnderscores" );
and then the function
function renderExample( $input ) {
would be changed to :
function renderUnderscores( $input ) {
You can then do whatever manipulations on the page content ( $input ) that you wish.
This code is untested, but should at least be close to what you seek.
return preg_replace("/\s/", "_", $input);
http://php.net/preg_replace has the manual page on this function.
Hopefully this will assist.

[edit] extension MINUSES

  • This would be same style just replacing spaces with minuses.
  • To see the advantage compare:
  1. google:Albert Einsteinhttp://www.google.com/search?q=Albert_Einstein8.550 found
  2. http://www.google.com/search?&q=%22Albert_Einstein%22 (having quotes) – 8.550 found
  3.  != http://www.google.com/search?&q=%22Albert+Einstein%22 (exact search) – 4.600.000 found
  4.  != http://www.google.com/search?&as_q=%22Albert+Einstein%224.600.000 found
    1. eventuale ankaux http://www.google.com/search?&as_q=Albert-Einstein4.490.000 found

[edit] {{SERVER}}{{localurl:TITLE|action=toggle&etc}}

  • I think this is not an extension. Until now I use the following in templates:
  1. "h" = {{SERVER}}{{localurl:TITLE|action=history}}
  2. "e" = {{SERVER}}{{localurl:TITLE|action=history&etc<edit>}}</nowiki>
  3. "c" = {{SERVER}}{{localurl:TITLE|action=history<purge>}}</nowiki>
  • Some languages as ro: have the equivalent for "talk" before the namespace, other have it after as en: and other are using diffrent forms in genitive as eo:.

  • To my understanding {{SERVER}}{{localurl:TITLE|action=toggle&etc}} should change a namspace with the associated namespace:

http://XX.wikiYYYY.org/w/index.php?title=TITOLO&action=toggle simple intersxangxu la nomspacojn jene:

  1. (Main) <-> Talk
  2. User < - > User talk
  3. Betawiki < - > Betawiki talk
  4. File < - > File talk
  5. MediaWiki < - > MediaWiki talk
  6. Template < - > Template talk
  7. Help < - > Help talk

  • Hi Nike! Have you made some MediaWiki updates at golem:?
  • The error at golem:Project:Community Portal disappeared before I was able to take a look if it is / was relating to Mozilla Firefox only or also to MS IE.
  • Another explanation would be that it was related to caching either at the wiki or in my brobser (FireFox). I remember that I pressed Ctrl+SHIFT+R several times but the error was still there. Regards Gangleri | Th | T 12. heinäkuuta 2005 kello 10:29:16 (EEST)
No, unless it was related to the wgUseValidation change, which i don't think so. Nukawiki is running usually the latest development version and golem little older. --Nike 12. heinäkuuta 2005 kello 19:27:44 (EEST)

[edit] Unicode characters in MediaWiki and special:Allmessages

  • Dear Nike! I was thinking about the whitespace and bidirectional characters and their inclusion in MediaWiki messages.
  • Because the usage of &entity;, &#nnnn; and &#xnnn; is causing problems in MediaWiki messages their usage might be still legitimate. As you know these characters could apear as Unicode caharacters inside messages but then it would be very difficult for normal users to detect them.
  • I do not know much php syntax and today it is quite difficult for me to make google researchs about php syntax and proper encoding.
  • project:LanguageWa.php and MessagesWa.php|diff=23780&oldid=22384 shows that &nbsp; characters have been removed (or replaced with the Unicode character which would be impossible in some editors or using some operating systems).
  • I ask you if there is some syntax availabe already to include the unicode characters using the "\" escaping technique as follows:
old message:
'nocontribs' => 'Nou candjmint di trové ki corespondreut a ç\'&nbsp;critere la.',
possible new message:
'nocontribs' => 'Nou candjmint di trové ki corespondreut a ç\'\x80critere la.',
or whatever would be valid php

I assume that it might be possibe to submit files where this would be done via php concatenation
but I would never suggest this because it would be a *one way* method:

'nocontribs' => 'Nou candjmint di trové ki corespondreut a ç' . \x80 . 'critere la.',
or whatever would be valid php
  • The maintenace of the MediaWiki messages including the usage of all (allowed) Unicode characters should be possible via editing the pages in the wiki. All content should be visible or displayed alternatively.
  • Export: special:Allmessages, special:Allmessages|ot=php and special:Allmessages|ot=msg should be able to output code that can be used in unified patches, documentation, used for "copy and paste" actions while keeping whitespace and bidirectional characters visible.
  • This does not need to be implemented today, tomorrow but should be an issue with high priority and needs to be discussed with the other developers in order to get their support. They should be happy that they do not have to deal with this / did not have to deal with this until now.
Actually, I think the right way to handle the "nbsp" for Wallon would be something similar to what has been implemented for French (where "« aaa »" (written without nbsp) renders as "«.nbsp;aaa.nbsp;»" (with proper html entities, off course, but if I use it you won't see it :-) )
I don't know where that is defined (it doens't seem to be in the Language files), but it would be nice to be able to extend it in the Language files
for example for quotes; as it is now, it works with « xxx » quotes; but not with “ xxx ” or ” xxx „ etc. (the problem with those is that the starting and ending quotes may change from language to language)
I put in Keskustelu_Betawikista:LanguageWa.php_and_MessagesWa.php#nbsp test words to test; they should all have a non breakable space after the apostrophe, but not before (eg: «xxx 'ne» shouldn't), with the exception of «av'» (but it isn't a problem if it has, is just that it doesn't need to have one)
the reason is that, with the exception of «av'», those apostrophes are suppressions of an ending vowel due to the following word starting with a vowel; so the word is read in a same breath with the following, and it is odd, and typographically incorrect, if you have a line ending with a dangling apostrophe.

[edit] P.S.

  • I just looked at many MediaWiki messages where
  1. "{{SITENAME}}"
  2. "{{ns:namespace}}"
  3. "$n"
  • are used without any knowledge about the directionality of "'{{SITENAME}}", "{{ns:namespace}}", "$n". This can give unpredictable results depending on where and how the messages are included / used.
  • There are various rules about how to embed a text without knowledge about his directionality inside a left to right text as the Swedish user interface and keeping rendering properly. We can discuss this later.
  • I did mention it now because this would require the usage of "&lrm;" inside LTR projects. Allowing only embeding as nonprintable character for the general punctuation characters does realy not make any sense and would only create hundered of questions, faulty configurations and possibly misuse.

[edit] improved special:Allmessages and headers for the three editboxes

  • Hi Nike! Your improvement received great applause. I suggest to put some kind of small headers above the editboxes. You should not need any new message at the moment. I suggest to use the following for editinf a MediaWiki:Mainpage/eo page
  1. English DIRMARK(Messages.php)
  2. Esperanto DIRMARK(MessagesEo.php)
  3. Esperanto DIRMARK(<strong>MediaWiki:Mainpage/eo</strong>)
  • where the fallback language is used at 1.) and the names are fetched from Names.php.

[edit] cu

The Swedish version is almost finished, right? Sanna can find me if she wants to. The rest of the wiki I do not suppose I have so much to do with, the talk pages are filled with weird things that I do not understand... cu on Wikipedia and on IRC. I have not turned off the function to get email if someone writes on my talk (nice function! never knew about it) so you can easily reach me if there is some more Swedish stuff coming up here. // habj 27. toukokuuta 2006 kello 01.27 (EEST)

[edit] does {{SUBST:GENERICNS}} gerenate an error in the main namespace?

  • Dear Nike! Below you will find "<-- commented code -->". If you copy this code to a page in the main namespace and make a preview you will get the following errors:
Notice: Undefined offset: 0 in /home/nike/public_html/dev/includes/Namespace.php on line 98

Notice: Undefined offset: 0 in /home/nike/public_html/dev/includes/Namespace.php on line 98
  • Please note that the error will not happen at your user talk page if you deactivate the comment temporarily. Please note that the code does not relate to "{{SUBST:}}". If you edit Magic words/test and make a preview there you get the same error but you will not find any active "{{SUBST:}}" any more.
  • The errors also happens when you reload CANONICALNS. Best regards G - ג · T · w:en: Th · T 5. kesäkuuta 2006 kello 04.48 (EEST)

[edit] als: gsw: mess

  • Dear Nike! While I tried to changed the "{{ns:<canonical_namespace_name>}}" syntax I realised that:
  1. special:Allmessages|sort=1&uselang=gsw#msg_august/gsw is showing "August" while
  2. special:MessagesViewer/Gsw is showing "'august' => 'Ougschte',"
  • Maybe this relates to the fact that "MessagesDe.php" is not "converted" so far. Best regards G - ג · T · w:en: Th · T 11. kesäkuuta 2006 kello 03.58 (EEST)
