The misunderstandings are strong in this thread...

Briefly, since these things come up in all these threads and I get tired of repeating myself, some people are assuming "Jurassic Park" movie tech, and most people don't think about inserted, and possibly dead, viruses being spread again.

You're not brining back the actual corpse of the mammoth and reanimating it. You're slapping some DNA on elephant DNA and birthing one from an elephant. I fail to see how that can spread ancient viruses?

Uh viruses are DNA and RNA hence the danger of fucking around with ancient samples of DNA and RNA. You poke around split a cell or start ripping DNA with viral RNA in it and boom you have zombies roaming the earth eating brains. You're not talking about giant ass bacteria here. These are itty bitty critters, for instance the oh so fun filoviruses are only a thousand or so nanometers long. Viruses are bad lil fuckers.

edit: still neat shit though

edit2: at least I think that is what Sol is getting at. If not fuck him it still holds water as an explanation.  angry

Can you transfer virus DNA to an animal's offspring? I'm still not seeing how this is dangerous if you did it in a sealed room with sterilization procedures ect.

No clue on vectors or how the virus would transfer, I know they are particularly resilient little fuckers and many lay dormant until they decide to replicate like mad and kill the host. I think the sentiment is there are a lot of unknowns and they are dealing with something that could wipe out the human.

So I'm not really understanding the risk of virus here, are you worried the specific cell that they use to map the DNA might actually have been injected with the viruses RNA and we wouldn't be able to tell?

Sorry, been a long time since I took biology... embarassed

There are viruses that integrate into host DNA. The most common form of cloning injects a full DNA strand into a prepared host cell.

What he said. Once you start either ripping DNA apart or trying to inject it into other cells you run the risk of taking nasty lil fucker along.

I bet there's more risk in opening some Egyptian tomb than in doing this mammoth stuff, with regards to viruses.

I doubt it. viruses can write themselves into DNA, therefore when ripping DNA apart to slap on other DNA I'd imagine you run the risk of transferring the RNA of a virus on to a host that provides a chance to propagate and reproduce. Either way we all die to brain eating zombies.

I have to agree.  Even if there is a virus, I'd think it's extremely unlikely that it would be both harmful to humans and capable of spreading.

The filoviruses are deadly in the sense that if you get you are almost guaranteed death, but they usually burn themselves out before they can really spread. Flu has cause more deaths due to its ability to easily change into new strains and the ability to hide in other mammals and birds.

I just have them, filoviruses, on the brain. I just reread a book by former CDC virus hunters which covered them.

Ever read the hot zone? Good book. Our home office is 15 minutes from Reston, VA, in Maryland.

Yes. I just finished Level 4 Virus Hunters of the CDC for the second time. It reads fast since it is basically a diary.
