GOOD MONDAY MORNING, ALL!

TAKE SOME AT THE DOOR....

THIS DAY IN HISTORY...

1860 - The book, "Malaeska, the Indian Wife of the White Hunter" by Mrs. Ann Stevens, was offered for sale for a dime. It was the first published "dime novel."

1861 - Mary Ann "Mother" Bickerdyke began working in Union hospitals.
During the war, she became chief of nursing under the command of General Ulysses S. Grant, and served at the Battle of Vicksburg. When his staff complained about the outspoken, insubordinate female nurse who consistently disregarded the army's red tape and military procedures, Union Gen. William T. Sherman threw up his hands and exclaimed, "She outranks me. I can't do a thing in the world."

1924 - "Jelly-Roll Blues" was recorded by Jelly Roll Morton and his band.
Ferdinand "Jelly Roll" Morton (September 20, 1885 or October 20, 1890 – July 10, 1941) was an American jazz pianist, bandleader and composer whom some call the first true composer of jazz music. Morton was a colorful character who liked to generate publicity for himself by bragging. His business card referred to him as the Originator of Jazz, and during his life he was regarded as a source of rare historical information, despite his penchant for hyperbole.wiki

Beautiful Opening! Olyve, I've got to go over and read about Hillary's five stages of grief.

Wow! Lots of amazing people in today's opener - a ton of good information, thanks, Olyve.

And the kudzu...it's always hard for me to understand that something so beautiful can be so destructive. But then some people see beauty in rattlesnakes, too (and I'm sure it's there - just hard for the rest of us to see.)

Thanks for the bagel!

Subject TV Shows: Has anyone seen "In Plain Sight" on USA? Is it just me or does the show really, really resemble "Saving Grace?" I think I like "In Plain Sight" better.

Thanks Bama and Mellow.

Yes Mellow, kudzu is amazing. It can grow a foot a night. It covers so much of the southeast.... 7 million acres. It's not native though. It was introduces as a gift from Japan in the late 1800's. It was used for erosion control during the depression and in the 70s it was finally declared a weed.
People have gotten creative with it though. Making baskets and even eating it.

What made me think of it though was that the baseball field on UGA campus has section outside of the fence where unpaid spectators sit on a hill that is called Kudzu Hill. After the game yesterday the players turned and applauded the Hill. It was pretty cool.
Yes they are going to Omaha. Better rent some movies and stay in next weekend, Mel....

BamaMama, I saw "In Plain Sight" last night for the first time, and I liked it a lot, even though I was prepared to dislike yet another sexy blonde crime show. I liked it a thousand times better than "Saving Grace" which I haven't liked since the first episode. I'll definitely watch "In Plain Sight" again, especially since it comes on right after my absolute favorite show, Law and Order Criminal Intent (the ones with Vincent D'Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe).

Ditto EmmaG. Didn't it seem as if they re-did "Saving Grace" and this time they got it "right?" Even the music is similar. I love Holly Hunter so I hated that "Saving Grace" was so "over the top."

I too LOVE Vincent D'Onofrio. I may have my TiVo set incorrectly because I never seem to get his episodes. Did you ever watch the "Inspector Haver" mysteries on PBS. Katherine Erbe looks, in my opoinion, so similar to Haver's side-kick and their roles are also similar.
