Wikipedia:Internet Explorer Internet Explorer was Microsoft's attempt to compete with Netscape, a rival browser. Initially just an addon to Microsoft Windows, Since Windows 98, it has become fused to the Windows Kernel, preventing it from being safely removed, although nLite does allow for IE to be removed in Windows 2000, XP and Server 2003.
After emerging the victor of the "browser wars" in the late '90s, Internet Explorer had a near-monopoly on the browser market, until just recently, when it has been challenged by the likes of Apple's Safari and Mozilla Firefox.
