About me and my droid

Hi, I'm DroidWelder! A.K.A. David L.

I have been an R2 Builders club member since July 3rd 2002. I live in Phoenix, Arizona. The photo posted above to the right is of me with the ILM and Disney R2's at C IV.

This is the Droid I made for C IV. I didn't have an astromech anywhere near ready yet and wanted something different that stood out from all the other droids that I could make in a short period of time. So I made this one. I've designated it M8-E4 Maintenance Droid. It took me three weeks and about $400 to build including all the R/C gear and lights. The body was an old Genie brand shop vac tub that I found in a trash pile. The shape of it looked really neat so I had to use it. When Kenny Baker toured the Builders Room he saw my Droid and stopped, put his hands on it and asked "And what's this little Droid?." I think he really liked it. It was also very popular with the really small children. It's not as big and intimidating as a full size Astromech. This photo was taken by Bonnie Burton. (A LucasFilm VIP and author of the book "You Can Draw Star Wars") I copied it from her photo album. It's one of the better photos I've seen of my droid yet. I've also taken it to the Phoenix Cactus Comicon in January of 2008 where it was a big hit with many of the attendees. Felix Silia jokingly asked me "What happened to R2?"
I replied: "He was left in the dryer too long."

You can see video of the R2 Builders Room at C IV with some footage of my Droid as well as other builder's Droids at the links below.
